Engineering Technicians apply proven techniques and procedures to the solution of practical engineering problems. They are able to demonstrate learning to NVQ3/SVQ6 or similar. It is a formal recognition of your engineering skills and competence and an important stepping stone towards becoming an Incorporated Engineer or a Chartered Engineer.

Although you don't need any formal qualifications, you'll need to have knowledge and understanding of technical matters to NVQ3/SVQ6 or equivalent.
You will need to demonstrate that you meet the Engineering Council competences and requirements.

New registrants pay an application fee* and an annual subscription.

If you're not professionally active or your annual income is below £18,000 you may qualify for a reduced subscription.

For anyone working in an engineering field. You don’t need any formal qualifications, although typically EngTechs have an NVQ3/SVQ6 or similar. You will have to prove competence in your field by demonstrating key personal and professional skills.

If you have completed an IMechE approved modern/advanced apprenticeship you can apply through the EngTech approved route scheme. You will need to prove you are making a personal commitment to an appropriate code of professional conduct.

All applicants for registration with the Engineering Council (EngC) and membership of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers are assessed against the standards as defined by EngC within the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). The 4th edition of the UK-SPEC was implemented from 31 December 2021, and is now the version of the standards used to assess applicants for registration. The 4th edition is available here.
