Philip O’Connor

What do you do?

I am the Associate Director of Engineering at Trant Engineering, where I lead our multi-disciplined design department. Working alongside a highly skilled and forward-looking team, I help drive innovation and technical excellence across our water and wastewater design portfolio. 

I oversee Trant Engineering’s integrated design function, aiming for seamless coordination between design and construction teams. My role centres on enabling our talented engineers to work efficiently, maintain ISO9001 compliance, meet client requirements, and produce high-quality, digitally enabled solutions that support successful and sustainable project outcomes.

What inspired you to be an engineer?

Growing up, my father worked in New Zealand’s construction sector which introduced me to the value of problem-solving and the impact engineers can make. The ‘can-do’ mindset is part of the culture there and I learnt how engineering teams can positively influence outcomes through collaboration, innovation and resourcefulness – principles that continue to influence my approach today.

Why did you become a Fellow with the IMechE?

I pursued Fellowship with the IMechE to demonstrate the value of professional recognition to the Developing Engineers on our accredited MPDS programme. As Scheme Owner and Mentor, I wanted to lead by example, helping our team appreciate the importance of active engagement with the profession and strengthening the integrity and leadership we contribute to it.

Fellowship has reinforced my commitment to professional standards and supported my progression at Trant Engineering. It has enabled me to represent the organisation with greater authority, provide visible leadership to early-career engineers, and ensure our high-performing team continues to be recognised for its professionalism, innovation and contribution to the wider community.

What are your top member benefits?

For me the most valuable benefits are professional credibility, access to structured pathways for ongoing development, and meaningful avenues to mentor others. All of these support both my own development and that of my team, helping me remain aligned with best practice and contribute meaningfully to the profession in my own small way.

What are your career aspirations?

I aim to continue strengthening Trant Engineering’s design capability, expanding its expertise and reputation for practical, high-quality engineering. As we continue growing the team I’m focused on helping them make the most of digital tools, sustainable approaches and emerging technologies to deliver efficient solutions and long-term value for our clients and the wider industry.
