PROFESSIONALLY ACTIVE

Are you a professionally active engineer or technician?

A professionally active engineer is a registered engineer who applies their engineering knowledge in activities involving third parties, where their engineering judgement may affect or be relied upon by others. You are also considered professionally active if you are a registered engineer expecting to resume such activities in the foreseeable future. If you are retired but still applying your engineering knowledge to engineering-related activities, you are considered professionally active.

Maintaining registration as an EngTech, IEng or CEng requires you to engage in and record your Continuing Professional Development (CPD). The amount of CPD required will vary depending on individual circumstances. For instance, a full time, mid-career engineer will likely have more extensive CPD than a retired member involved in voluntary activities.

If you are no longer professionally active and not applying your engineering knowledge in ways that affect others, you are not required to maintain a CPD record. However, as a holder of professional registration, you remain eligible for selection in the CPD Audit and it is your responsibility to declare your status accordingly.

If you are unsure whether you would be considered professionally active, or are uncertain about how much CPD activity is appropriate for your circumstances, you can reach out to the team at CPD@imeche.org for guidance.

Definition of professionally active

A registered engineer is deemed professionally active if:

  • They are employed in a remunerated engineering related role
  • They are retired but participate in voluntary activities utilising their engineering knowledge. For example, involvement in Institution activities, charitable work, or public engagement where they share insights based on their engineering expertise.
  • They are on a career break but intend to return to an engineering role in the foreseeable future. Career breaks may lead to a non-active status if they are longer; however, individuals regain active status when preparing to return to an active role and are refreshing their knowledge.

A registered engineer is not considered professionally active if:

  • They are retired and use their engineering knowledge solely for personal interests with no potential impact on others.
  • They are employed in a position that has no link to engineering, and they do not plan to return to an engineering-related role in the foreseeable future.
